Special Project - Sport Team Leader

To assist WNZ in working toward our stated strategic objectives we will soon be announcing the roll-out of our new Organisation Structure. This will include formalising a volunteer-based Commission structure. More on this soon.
In the meantime Gabby Peach has been appointed to a project-based role entitled "Sport Development Leader".
One of the primary focuses is to make improvements to the way events are managed and conducted, including developing additional resources to assist event hosts.
Gabby will also have communication and sport promotion responsibilities.

NZL Olympic Weightlifting team

The NZL team for the Tokyo Olympics has been finalised, with 5 athletes being selected - the largest team of weightlifters from NZ to compete at an Olympics.
WNZ again congratulates Megan Signal, Kanah Andrews-Nahu, Laurel Hubbard, Cameron McTaggart, and David Liti on their selection.
The team will be supported by Richie Patterson, Tina Ball, Simon Kent, and Callan Helms as coaches, and Barbara Grieve will be officiating as a Technical Official at the event.
The team departs on Tuesday for Tokyo, and we wish the entire delegation a safe, successful event.

Weightlifting NZ Congratulate 5 Olympic Selections

The NZOC have today confirmed the selection of Weightlifting NZ's largest ever Olympic contingent.
We congratulate Megan Signal (-76), Kanah Andrews-Nahu (-87), Laurel Hubbard (+87), Cameron McTaggart (-81) and David Liti (+109) on their selection, and their coaching team.
We wish them all the best for this pinnacle event.

Inclusive Open Day

As part of WNZ's move towards greater inclusivity in weightlifting, an "Inclusive Open Day" is being hosted at Functional Strength Olympic Weightlifting on Saturday 19 June.
There will be a number of sessions starting at 12.30pm which will provide opportunities for differently abled people to take part in a range of options to participate in weightlifting.

NZL Results From IWF Masters Virtual World Championships

A number of WNZ members competed over the last week in the IWF Masters Virtual World Championships.
The results included 10 podium finishes for NZL athletes.
Congratulations to first place finishers Danicke Hampton and Ehsan Bayati; 2nd place finishers Lyn Mayes, Kirsten Walker, Tania Hodges, Gloria Aumaivao Tasi, and Jennifer Brown; and third place getters Greg Bahler, Graeme Evans, and Claire Nahi.

North Island Championship Entry Update

Please note a slight change in the eligibility of entry into the North Island Championships. Athletes who have not yet competed in a sanctioned event in 2021 but have competed in a Championship event in the last 12 months (2020 Junior or Senior National Championships, 2020 Masters National Championships, 2020 Secondary School Championships) are now eligible to enter.
Entries close Monday May 31st at 8pm. This event has already received in excess of 150 entries, there has been ample communication around entry timeframes, and ample opportunity to enter. The ONLY instance in which a late entry will be accepted is in the

Weightlifting New Zealand Re-brand

Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand Inc has adopted the changed "known as" brand name "Weightlifting New Zealand".
This brings us into line with the majority of national federations and international bodies, and provides us opportunities to grow involvement and appeal to a wider community.
We have recently begun an initiative with Parasports that will provide opportunities for adaptive athletes to be more involved in our organisation - as the attached press release outlines.
